Carmen Coronado iLab SCI 228 June 12, 2011 BMI Part 1 Define BMI-You should characterize BMI and not similarly as a general definition demonstrating its relationship to stature and weight. If it's not too much trouble likewise remember to characterize the genuine term BMI! The weight record (BMI) is of an estimation that was presented in the mid nineteenth century so as to arrange the whole populationââ¬â¢s weight issues. The BMI is a measurement that is utilized to characterize individuals' weight as underweight, typical weight, overweight or hefty. The equation that is utilized to compute ones BMI is that the decimal measuring standard will separate ones load in kilograms by ones tallness in squared meters. At that point the units require the doctors to duplicate ones load in pounds by 703 and will at that point isolate the number that was gotten by ones tallness in inches squared. The weight file will demonstrate on the off chance that one is underweight, typical, overweight, and additionally stout classes. Section 2 Calculate BMI-Many understudies utilize a robotized adding machine to finish this piece of the task. I will deduct focuses on the off chance that I don't see the real math counts. It would be ideal if you incorporate all phases of the math estimations related with deciding your BMI. There is an around 1800 calories that ought to be ingested. With respect to my BMR (basal metabolic rate) is around 1300 calories, which I ought to eat around 700 additional calories with the goal for it to represent the measure of vitality I will exhaust during the day in both my every day exercises. With respect to food, this involves eating satisfactory segments of starches, proteins, and fats. A bowl of steel-cut oats with included entire milk, with a bunch of almonds, bested with a tablespoon of ground flaxseed and blended berries likens to around 600 calories. In the early in the day I would have a nibble of a protein shake and an apple that will work out to be around 100 calories. For lunch a serving of mixed greens containing flame broiled chicken pieces, romaine lettuce, corn, shoestring beets, carrots, soybeans that will work out to be around 500 calories. For supper I would have a plate with seared rice, some blended vegetables, pureed potatoes, and a bit of fish prepared with garlic salt and lemon that would come out to be around 500 calories. So I would be left with 100 calories toward the finish of my day. Reference - Janiszewski, Peter. Weight list (BMI) as a proportion of corpulence and wellbeing: a basic evaluation. Free Essay: Analysis of Sonnet 12 :: Sonnet essays
Investigation of Sonnet 12 At the point when I do check the clock that tells the time, Furthermore, see the fearless day soaked in ugly night: At the point when I observe the violet past prime, Also, sable twists o'er-silver'd all with white; At the point when elevated trees I see infertile of leaves, Which erst from heat canopied the group, What's more, summer's green all braced up in stacks Borne on the casket with white and bristly facial hair: At that point of thy excellence do I question make That thou among the burns through of time must go, since desserts and delights do themselves spurn, Furthermore, bite the dust as quick as they see others develop; Also, nothing 'gainst Time's sickle can make safeguard spare variety to overcome him when he takes thee consequently. This is an agreeable poem that utilizes nature symbolism, discovered broadly in Petrarca, that Shakespeare uses to express what is on his mind. Very little elucidation is required, aside the continued pictures of nature, to completely comprehend its expectation, yet I might want to call attention to an impossible to miss implication. When perusing line 3, the violet past prime has made me consider Venus and Adonis. At long last, Adonis liquefies into the earth and a violet sprouts where his body was, which Venus at that point puts in her heart, connoting the adoration she has for him. Adding this to the sonnet makes the couple of following lines increasingly critical. Having Adonis depicted as the attractive youth, Shakespeare is suggesting the passing of youth (when all is said in done and to the youngster) through the poem. In the following line, it isn't sure if sable is a descriptive word or a thing and if twists is a thing, alluding to hair (which is conceivable) or an action wo rd altering sable. Invoking the mention to Adonis here, Shakespeare predicts that if Adonis did live more, he also would have turning gray hair; hence, Shakespeare sees [behold] an Adonis figure, the youngster, past his childhood.

5 Things Youre Forgetting to Ask During Your Review
5 Things Youâre Forgetting to Ask During Your Review The basic purpose of a performance review is to provide feedback on your performance. However, the vast majority of such reviews finish within five minutes because most of the managers want to get over with it as soon as possible. As a matter of fact, most bosses feel at sea when it comes to reviewing someones performance. They normally do not have any plan to discuss your appraisal, nothing to talk about analyzing your strengths, weaknesses and future growth areas etc.You as an employee or subordinate obviously want to get a salary raise or possible promotion from your review. If you cannot attain both of these goals, you would at least try to get five-star ranking or wonderful reviews about your work. But, you have to face sheer disappointment on most occasions.About 90% of the managers would only show you your performance review form, saying you are doing a good job and that is it.Your review is over even before you have settled in your chair. It has happened to most of us in the past a nd will happen to some of us in the future. But, you need to keep in mind that a performance review is always a two-way conversation. For instance, you do not have to be a silent listener if your boss falls into the above-mentioned category. You can encourage a prolonged and fruitful discussion by asking some appropriate questions of your own.It is your opportunity to bond with your boss and expand your knowledge.Performance reviews are also the best time to share your suggestions and goals.Remember you are part of a team and you can only become a better professional by revealing what is working for you and what is not.More importantly, it will also enable your boss to become a better leader. There are employees who will never get a chance to sit with their boss and discuss their performance and show their commitment to the company. Therefore, never ever be a submissive participant during your performance review.Try to be more proactive and use this rare interaction with your manager to your maximum advantage.WHAT IS A PERFORMANCE REVIEW?In simple words, a performance review is a meeting between a manager and a team member where the earlier measures the efficiency and performance of the latter. The manager also assesses the employees effectiveness and subsequently, gives the appropriate feedback. The employee can use the feedback to improve his performance in the future. On most occasions, managers discuss other things like salary hike and possible promotion in the performance review as well. Also referred to as performance appraisal or check-ins, the performance review is your chance to improve your relationships with your boss or manager.Getting an honest feedback from the boss is also necessary because it often proves to be a decisive factor in making or breaking your corporate career. Establishing a good rapport with your boss means you will have a much easier time to perform your day to day duties.Similarly, the boss will most likely set lenient deadlines for you which you can meet in a fizzy. On the contrary, a shaky relationship with your boss means deadlines will be tighter for you. In addition, the work environment will be tense and stressful.Your immediate boss happens to be the most stressful person for you at your workplace. One way of reducing tension at work is to have good terms with your boss.Use your performance review to your advantage and try to develop a good relationship with your manager by asking some really thoughtful questions.5 QUESTIONS TO ASK DURING YOUR REVIEWIn the context of the above discussion, the following are the five questions you should always ask during your annual performance appraisal. What Are My Future Growth Areas? It always feels good when your boss praises you for your work.Admiration always works as a great ego booster. But, you are still not at your acme even if you have done nothing but performing absolutely brilliantly during the last year. There is always a room for improvement. It is your own duty t o identify your future growth areas and ask your boss, in your review, how to improve in those areas.Devoting some time to continuous professional development is also essential. If you want to grow professionally and move forward, you still have to learn and do a lot of new things. You need to ask your boss whether it should be in the form of taking a high-profile and difficult project, mastering a new technical skill or some sort of management training. Honestly speaking, most managers find it very difficult to identify growth areas for you.Things can get really tough for you if your boss has the tendency of giving critical feedback. You will struggle to perform according to his expectations in this particular case.He may only give a standard great job or similar feedback if you have done well in the period under discussion in the performance review, failing to think about any constructive advice which might help you in your future endeavors. In an ideal world, your boss should point o ut 2-3 areas you must focus on during the next 6-12 months. On the other hand, it is up to you to come up with your own growth areas in the review if your boss has not specified any.If your boss is in haste to finish the review, you can interrupt him and ask questions like, What are the next steps I should take for my career growth? or Do I need to learn new technical skills to assist my growth?Questions like these can turn your performance review on its head. They will compel the manager to change his strategy and think hard about your growth areas and performance. It also conveys the message to him that you take care of your career progression seriously. You can create a comprehensive list of growth areas also including the areas identified by the manager. Finally, never forget to take advice on how you can improve these areas and whether or not the organization will help you learn new skills. What Are the Goals You Want Me to attain?Bosses or managers set different goals for different employees depending upon their experience and skill set.The best time to make sure your boss clearly explains these goals to you is the performance review. It gives you a rare chance to have a long discussion with your boss and identify what are the goals he wants you to attain during the next year. After all, you cannot live up to your managers expectations if you do not have any idea what they are.Similarly, you should also prepare a list of goals you attained over the course of the last 12 months. It will enable you and your boss to reflect upon your achievements and failures and how you can rectify the mistakes which lead to those failures. It will help both of you to set realistic and specific, measurable, attainable and relevant goals for you.You and your boss should be in perfect harmony over what you want to accomplish in the next month, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months. Some employees also take the liberty of making a list of goals before going to the performance review.Subse quently, they ask their respective bosses to create their own list by adding or deleting goals from their list.Goal setting for the coming year can be really helpful as it enables you to prepare well in advance for the next performance review.Having clear goals in mind will help you set specific milestones and achievements against each goal, enabling you to improve your performance and negotiate a better package for yourself. You should not hesitate to ask how autonomous you are to attain each of these goals.Your manager probably trusts you a lot if he awards you a reasonable level of autonomy. Some of the questions you can ask about your goals during your performance review are, What you want me to accomplish by the next years performance review?Or, I want to ensure I set realistic and attainable goals for myself. How can you help me in this regard? Or What are some of the criteria you will assess my performance against in the future? It is pertinent to mention that most of the employ ees cannot articulate their own goals. They often do not have any idea what their boss or manager has in the bag for them. However, you must always have a full understanding of your bossâs priorities. As a result, you can give valuable assistance or information to your boss regarding setting your goals for the future, which will definitely improve your rankings during the next performance review.Timeline for Promotion or Salary RaiseAgainst common perception, your manager will not give you any salary raise, promotion or bonus after every performance review. He may only review your performance, pinpoint your weak areas, advice about how you can improve and set goals for the future. But, it is the best time to determine what is the timeline for your next promotion or raise. You can ask about what are the next steps you have to take to get there. One of the best methods to ensure your own growth is to show dedication and commitment to the companyâs growth in the annual review. It is defin itely better to talk about your performance and goals at the start, but you can and should end by talking about the possible date or month you will get your much-deserved promotion or salary raise.Sometimes, your boss will not reveal the exact timeline you so desperately want to know despite your best efforts. In this case, you can allude to your intentions by employing different techniques. For example, you can start by mentioning that you are really happy with your current salary and position and the growth opportunities the organization provides you with.It conveys to the manager that you want to talk about your raise or promotion in a more constructive and positive way instead of locking horns with him.Exact wording you can use to accomplish this task can be something like, I really like my position in the company.I am also thankful to the administration for providing me with abundant growth opportunities. What I can do in addition to performing my current duties to get a salary r aise or possibly a promotion? Can you please give me a timeline when you think I can get there?Timeline for Next ReviewYour annual performance review is the most important tool when it comes to analyzing your performance in the year gone by.However, it is not enough to measure your performance accurately. There are many other things you need to do to ensure you get the proper appraisal of your skills and services you render to your organization. For example, you should find ways to have frequent meetings with your boss or manager. Most of these meetings should focus on your performance and whether or not you are on the right path to attain all of your goals. You can even request for an informal check-in 6 to 7 months before the actual review. It is imperative for you to learn how your boss perceives of you if you want to perform better in the next annual review. It will also give you a lot of time to work on the areas which your boss thinks you need to improve. The more friendly, informal conversation will help you identify some of the extra projects and responsibilities you can take in the middle of the year.Casual talks can also reveal the real intentions and feelings of your boss, enabling you to modify your strategy accordingly.Similarly, you can also reconfigure your priorities and goals to meet the ever-changing expectations of higher authorities. This will go a long way in enhancing your ranking during the actual review. The questions you can ask to determine the exact timeline for next formal check-in can be, What is the approximate date when you will call me for the next performance review? or Can we have an informal check-in session sooner because the next formal session seems to be too far away? You can also rephrase the question such as I would love you to have an immediate performance review session so I make sure that I am on the right track to attain all my goals for the year.Is there Anyone Else I should Get Feedback from?It is commonly and somewhat rig htly believed that only your manager will analyze your performance in the annual check-ins.However, you should also strive to get feedback from some other people during the peak of the review season. These people may include boss of your boss, your clients, managers of other teams, anyone you report to or even your colleagues. The best person to ask where you can get extra feedback is your own manager. You can kill two birds with one stone by asking for additional feedback.Firstly, it shows your relentless commitment to your organization.Secondly, it shows that you want to be an integral part of your team and you are not doing all this to simply impress your superiors.Best of all, you will have a more holistic idea of your performance and what others, especially people occupying managerial positions, think of you. These are the people you normally come in contact with on a daily basis. What you can do is to ask your reviewer to introduce you to people who can give feedback that really m atters.Furthermore, utilize your performance view to meet new people and expand your network. However, always take your reviewer or managers advice about whom to meet.Asking multiple people to review your performance and give suggestions about how you can improve is definitely important. However, you should focus most of your energies and efforts to attain goals and accomplish tasks specified for you by your immediate boss or manager.Strive hard to meet all the expectations of the person directly in charge of your success. The question you can ask to find more people for your performance review is, Who are other people I can meet and get valuable and practical feedback from.CONCLUSIONYes, the main reason why performance reviews are carried out is to analyze what you have been doing for the past 12 months. But, you must also utilize the annual check-ins to plan for your future success. You should leave no stone unturned to learn what you need to do in the next year.Maximize the advantages of performance reviews and identify areas you must improve and skills you need to learn to get to the next level.

Alchemy in the Middle Ages
Alchemy in the Middle Ages was a mixture of science, philosophy, and mysticism. Far from operating within the modern definition of a scientific discipline, medieval alchemists approached their craft with a holistic attitude; they believed that purity of mind, body, and spirit was necessary to pursue the alchemical quest successfully. At the heart of medieval alchemy was the idea that all matter was composed of four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. With the right combination of elements, it was theorized, any substance on earth might be formed. This included precious metals as well as elixirs to cure disease and prolong life. Alchemists believed that the transmutation of one substance into another was possible; thus we have the clichà © of medieval alchemists seeking to turn lead into gold. Medieval alchemy was just as much art as science, and practitioners preserved their secrets with an obfuscating system of symbols and mysterious names for the materials they studied. Origins and History of Alchemy Alchemy originated in ancient times, evolving independently in China, India, and Greece. In all these areas the practice ultimately degenerated into superstition, but it migrated to Egypt and survived as a scholarly discipline. In medieval Europe, it was revived when 12th-century scholars translated Arabic works into Latin. The rediscovered writings of Aristotle also played a role. By the end of the 13th century, it was discussed seriously by leading philosophers, scientists, and theologians. The Goals of Medieval Alchemists To discover the relationship of man to the cosmos and take advantage of that relationship to the betterment of mankind. To find the philosophers stone, an elusive substance that was believed to make possible the creation of an elixir of immortality and the transmutation of common substances into gold.In the later Middle Ages, to use alchemy as a tool in the advancement of medicine (as Paracelsus did). Achievementsà of Alchemists in the Middle Ages Medieval alchemists produced hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, potash, and sodium carbonate. They were able to identify the elements arsenic, antimony, and bismuth.Through their experiments, medieval alchemists invented and developed laboratory devices and procedures that are, in modified form, still used today. The practice of alchemy laid the foundation for the development of chemistry as a scientific discipline. Disreputable Associations of Alchemy Due to its pre-Christian origins and the secrecy in which its practitioners carried out their studies, alchemy was viewed by the Catholic Church with suspicion and ultimately condemned.Alchemy was never taught in Universities but was instead transmitted from teacher to apprentice or student clandestinely.Alchemy attracted followers of the occult, with which it is still associated today. There was no shortage of charlatans who used the trappings of alchemy to defraud. Notable Medieval Alchemists Thomas Aquinas was an eminent theologian who was permitted to study alchemy before it was condemned by the Church.Roger Bacon was the first European to describe the process for making gunpowder.Paracelsus used his understanding of chemical processes to advance the science of medicine. The Legal Battle Between Fbi And Apple - 2339 Words
A federal judge ordered apple to help unlock an iPhone belonging to Syed Farook for the FBI, in which apple declined. Their logic behind declining the FBIââ¬â¢s request was that they would have to write new software that would be capable of opening hundreds and millions of phones. Apple executive Tim Cook argues that if the FBI could access this iPhone, nothing would stop them from doing it to many others. With these recent events the legal battle between the FBI and apple has reached its closing point, as the FBI found a way to hack into the apple device themselves. Conclusion Frank Barr May 6. 2013 Grade 6 Architecture Research Paper Architecture, one of the most common studies taken(and personally what Iââ¬â¢m aging on). I believe that architecture, plays a main role in everyoneââ¬â¢s life. ââ¬Å"Architecture- The art or practice of designing and constructing buildings. ââ¬Å". So basically, without architecture, wouldnââ¬â¢t any schools (yeah any students reading this probably do NOT want architecture to exist. ), we wouldnââ¬â¢t have any libraries, or any buildings in general. You can live four days without water, three days without food, but only three hours without shelter. So, you cannot LIVE without architecture, it is the act of creating buildings, buildings are shelter, without shelter you would die in three hours. So you can thank all the people in the field of architecture, that you are reading this now. Ancient Greek architecture is best known for its temples, if you were to visit you would find them all over the place. The ruins of many Greek temples are surprisingly still intact. The second most well known are the open air theaters, they have located them to date back to about 350 BC. Ancient Rome had much similar architecture, then again many Roman cultural things grew out of Greece. Like Greek Gods, myths, and again, their architecture. But much after Rome, was Europe, Europe wasnââ¬â¢t a lot alike Greece, but they shared some similarities. For instance, the open air theaters I mentioned that were located in Greece(as well as most of the Hellenic region), Europe, during the Shakespearean age, had many of them built. Although they were greatly refined and quickly grew into closed theaters, they were still there. Where Greek architecture is focused on using stone and clay building material, the Japanese used mostly wood whilst building. At first the Japanese were very primitive in their building, making mostly pit houses. But after the introduction of Buddhism, the Japanese started to create temples, but they had no material to build such things, so darted using wood. These temples started as one floor of the tall elaborate Japanese temples we know as of today. But as their skills increased, so did the size of the temples, they eventually grew to be about eight floors tall. Japanese architecture has been described as, ââ¬Å"Impossibleâ⬠. That is, due to its wooden frame being fairly weak, though it can hold up to five families, even at its tallest height. When Greece was using clay, and Japan was using wood, India was sitting there using sticks and stones(which mind you, did in fact, break their bones). India was one of he most primitive building societies. But, they eventually grew to become the greatest architects of the modern world, ex. The Tag Mall. Indian architecture is old, yet has incorporated many modern values. The style they used to build the Tag Mall soon spread worldwide and became very popular at the time. The earliest buildings from India found dated back to about 2500 B. C. After several centuries of their stone type building,Linda finally discovered bronze. This discovery rocked the country, the style of building changed completely. Not only did it change that, it also changed their military strength. By far one of the most famous and well recognized architects is, Frank Lloyd Wright. Many collectors would crave to live in a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (Architecture,l). He has designed several structures in Toledo alone. With his better known, ââ¬Å"Falling Waterâ⬠, he used ââ¬Å"Organic Architectureâ⬠, ex. He built it right on top of a waterfall. Several architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright used Organic Architecture. Through all of his years of architecture, it is said that he always hated museums, except for the Solomon R. Cunningham Museum (Thiele, 147). Personally I admire Frank Lloyd Wright, Eve always looked up to him as one of the greatest architects ever. But alas there are more who would pass him. When you think of ââ¬Å"from the inside outâ⬠, what comes to mind, probably not the Philharmonic Theatre. But Sharron does, thatââ¬â¢s probably because he planned the Philharmonic from the inside out, it is a world renowned structure. Keno Tangent, is a world renowned Japanese architect (Architecture, 1). Out of all famous architects, one of the most important is Doll Loss. He ranks as one of the most important pioneers of the modern movement in architecture (Architecture, 1). Fumier Make is responsible for of the great Japanese urban designs we see today. He is recognized for his urban designs, which you can find in most places in Japan (Architecture, 1). Habitat 67 is a housing complex located in Montreal, Canada. It was designed by famous architect, Mosher Safe. When Mosher put in the idea for Habitat 67 he was ridiculed for thinking up such absurd designs. Eventually he was able to come up with a model, after that the board of architecture decided he could do it. Mosher struggle to find a team willing to build such an absurd structure but eventually he succeeded. The team built Habitat 67 at an impossible rate, it was finished within five years after Mosher submitted the project. Habitat 67 is often referred to as ââ¬Å"Impossibleâ⬠, or ââ¬Å"Logos all over againâ⬠. I think It was amazing how hard Mosher worked to make this impossible project become a reality. Atomic, also referred to as ââ¬Å"The Atom buildingâ⬠, is a completely metal structure located in Brussels, atomic resembles the shape of an atom. Atomic is only big enough to hold about 100 people at once. When you walk into one of the branches of the atom like shape of Atomic, all you will see is darkness. Take a few steps and the motion insensitive neon lights will turn on. You will walk and be lost in a world of optical illusions and ââ¬Å"magicâ⬠lights. At the ball shape part of each branch, you will find a room, you can rent these rooms for a single night . Although I have never been to Atomic I dream that in the near future I would be able to have the chance to go. To wrap this up all I have to say is that I dream of someday becoming an architect. Architecture is a main part of our daily lives, without it weââ¬â¢d be dead. I donââ¬â¢t think anyone I know really appreciates the people who took years out of their lives to give us things Atomic and Habitat 67. People donââ¬â¢t spend their time to realize how much hard work it would have taken to build such elaborate things like ancient Japanese temples and Hellenic open air theaters. I dream of a world where people actually say ââ¬Å"Thank youâ⬠to the people that designed their house, their school, all their buildings. You Just donââ¬â¢t see that happening these days. Thank you for your time, that is all. Bibliography ââ¬Å"Architecture. â⬠Wisped. 4/16/13.. ââ¬Å"Famous Architects. â⬠Architecture. 4/15/13.. Thiele, Sabine. Icons of Architecture. Analysis of AVS shift from providing social service to fostering civil society development and factors that contributed to the shift Change of Leadership Styles Agency for Volunteer Service (AVS) experienced a temporary management catastrophe in 1997, when the executive director passed on. It was not clear who would be the immediate successor. Managerial styles were a major blow to AVS. A good example was the tenure of office by Mr Frederick Lee Jr. His style of leadership was centralized and remained unchanged throughout the seven years he was in office (Wong and Chan, 2007, p.2).Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on Management in Agency Volunteer Services specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More A panel of management committee members was required to make most of the major decisions, but the CEO made all resolutions independently. The committee was thus just a formal body, whose roles were honorary as opposed to admini strative. The executive director was thus the epicentre for the years he was in office. His demise was a sudden call for change on the managementââ¬â¢s structure as well as managerial style at AVS. Nobody was ready to take over because the previous regime had no procedures of delegating duties. The board of directors had to take over management, assign directorship and find ways of organizing administration. Change of Donorsââ¬â¢ Support As a non-governmental organization, AVS was dependent on the governmentââ¬â¢s social welfare department as their main sponsor. The department was a major benefactor with over 80% of AVS funds. The department however shifted goals in year 2000 to become a home affairs bureau. Considering that, the department was the main donor, AVSââ¬â¢s Commitment thus changed from social services to align with the bureauââ¬â¢s role of nurturing development of the civil society. This translated to change of management strategies to cater for bureau re sponsibilities. According to Wong and Chan (2007, p.9), the organization had to change its operation strategies. The government was considering community development, achieved through empowering the society as opposed to the reactive model of delivering social services to the needy. The government was ready to work side-by-side with the organization; therefore, AVS had to change its operation strategies to fit the new needs of the bureau. ââ¬Å"International Year of Volunteersâ⬠The NGO also faced new challenges due the strategic review of 2001, which saw the organization engage new vision of establishing competence and partnership to promote sustainable development through volunteerism campaigns (Wong and Chan, 2007, p.9). Change of organization strategies was eminent during the campaigns in order to improve service quality for volunteers internationally.Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? The organization also needed to ensure that new services were in line with the overall objectives, mission and vision of the government (sponsors). This meant that AVS had to change the overall values at the managerial level to measure up with the new requirements and objectives of the government bureau. Although the operational level would remain practically the same, the management would need clear directives for long-term survival in the civil society. Role of Management There was also need to have a clear difference and categorization between role of the management and board of directors. This would assist the organization avoid a situation like what had happened earlier, when the CEO passed on. The two units were the core service bodies of the organization and a clear administrative procedure would translate to improved efficiency and effectiveness. Financial resources were becoming more limited therefore the organization needed officials who were competent enough to manage through implementation of cost-effective measures. They would also keenly work in line with government policies to avoid uncertainties that would negatively affect funding. The staffs were concern over job insecurity and this meant the management had to strategically redefine and address all apprehensions afresh. Reasons Why AVS engaged transformation in the aim of implementing a Strategic Vision There were needs for the management to review its work strategies and plan by implementing a SWOT (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis (Wong and Chan, 2007, p.8). In line with Wong and Chan (2007, p.8), a three-year strategic plan, vision and mission of the organization were re-established. Some of the highlighted aspects included procedures of enforcing a people-oriented volunteering initiative by proactively encouraging pot ential volunteers. Secondly, the managerial paradigm shift would address citizenââ¬â¢s involvement in volunteering as a key future strategy of empowering the society. Thirdly, the organization would need to enforce a global participation initiative to facilitate transfer of skills, technology and mutual coordination among potential volunteers.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on Management in Agency Volunteer Services specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More AVS had to strategize on ways of fighting individualism by enriching volunteering through participation in practical activities such as culture, health and environment. Lastly, the organization had to enforce productivity through implementation of new information technology for instance the web-based volunteering initiative. AVS needed to focus mostly on the importance of collaborating with diverse sectors, mobilize and facilitate superiority services. There was also need to proactively educate the society and encourage participation in promotion of sustainable development. Secondly, the limited budget of AVS meant that the organization had to scale down and focus on ensuring perfection, to promote quality-volunteering services. The organization also focused on fulfilment of its mission and through the 30-yearsââ¬â¢ experience, decided to pursue the vision of finding more global strategic partners. In line with Wong and Chan, the internationally designated year of volunteers (2001) instigated networking, promotion, facilitation and recognition as the key elements for better service delivery (Spector, p.68). Notably, AVS needed to recruit qualified professionals for international assignments especially at transnational levels, especially in developing countries. Competencies Demonstrated by AVS Management in Facilitation of Organization Transformation AVS engaged partnership with various agencies including the private sectors for instanc e the Crystal Group, which funded the volunteering program in China (Wong and Chan, p.10). The new management comprising of Board of managers provided a recruitment procedure for the managerial level employees. Competent managers were required to cater for international duties especially in developing countries. It was professional for them to search beyond the traditional societies, and develop contacts in cultural, health and educational sector. Beside the environmental and initial managerial challenges, the ability to budget for limited resources and effectively deliver services demonstrated the organizationââ¬â¢s competence. The self-sufficiency of the organization particularly after the government funds decreased from 80% in 1970s-1980s to 30% in 2000 indicated improved managerial competence especially on financial management (Wong and Chan p.8). Analysis of government budgetary allocations between 1999 and 2004 indicated that the organization was departing from being full d ependent on government provisions (Wong and Chan p.8).Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More AVS management decided executive committee members could not play an honorary role like the previous board, but be more active, visible in performance and accountable. The board would thus oversee the managerial duties. The competence of the management was visible when they were keen on acquisition of resources through lobbying for funds to establish potential partnerships. arious special initiatives were also eminent, for instance the ââ¬Å"study on volunteering service in 2001â⬠(Wong and Chan, p.9). The management had established a volunteering service plan, which was a 3-year strategic review plan among other future development plans. The program was in place by 2001(Wong and Chan, p.17). Influences of the NGO Environment on Managerial Procedures of Handling Change The environmental or structural setup of non-governmental organizations varies considerably. The current advancement of information and communication technology influences formation of community/locally-based NG Os that are active at national and international levels. The organizations are social forums formed within a civil society. The society on the other hand works in partnership with the government and private sectors. The government therefore has influence over organizations through civil societies. Organizations play an amicable role of strengthening and establishing civil societies especially in remote areas. Although formed as collaborating entities, the credibility of NGOs depends on independence. There is great influence on NGOs by the government due to funding, especially when the organization is highly dependent on such funds for instance the AVS case analysis in the 1980s and 1990s (Wong and Chan, p.11). The governments tend to influence organisations towards their political favours such as promoting regime policies. The emergence of ââ¬Ëgovernment owned NGOsââ¬â¢ abbreviated ââ¬ËGONGOââ¬â¢ thus emanates from such environments, where there are high government influ ences. An authoritarian social environment also has great influence over the way the organization handles changes. The organizations have financial difficulties when they act independently and the society may fails to recognize or acknowledge such an NGO, unless when based on a very strong social environment. NGOs dealing with humanitarian and development relief also face the challenge of establishing and sourcing more resources to run their operations. Considering the challenges, most of such organizations readily accept official government funding and weaken their influential powers, due to the controls established by the governments through the funds. The case study of AVS is a clear indication of how the government was influential at the initial stages. During the shift of focus from social service to civil society bureau, AVS had to transform and be in line with the funders. However, the organization improved and becomes more independent over the years of experience. Managerial competence and actions are the main influences of transformation in an NGO. There is great and constant transformation of organization environments especially the role and activities undertaken to lobby for funds. The role of the management is ever changing and thus technical expertise is increasingly becoming vital. The change of the work environment thus increases workloads and responsibilities. Change requires managers, board of directors or supervisors to understand the complexity of a workforce. The working environment directly determines the area of coverage, particularly the attitude and behaviour of volunteers and performance of the management. Conclusion The working environment also assists in defining human behaviour in relation to volunteering. Transparency of operations and managerial commitment to work in accordance with the set rules, vision, mission and goals helps to establish the work environment. Stakeholders especially the benefactors therefore cannot easily infl uence a work environment that is free from chances of venality. Risk Analysis Example
Risk Analysis Example Risk Analysis ââ¬â Coursework Example Risk Analysis [Pick the With the increasing use of modern information technology, it is become increasing important that appropriate measures be taken by organizations to protect their information from cyber threats and the related warfare. Managers of businesses are therefore becoming increasingly conscious about the sensitivity of this issue, and are employing various measures to ensure privacy and protection (Steer et al, 2010). Due to the fact that the world is turning into a global village, the managers should keep in mind the fact that additional measures should be taken to ensure security of a companyââ¬â¢s information, if information has been outsourced to third parties for processing. In order to ensure the effectiveness of measures taken to protect sensitive information, it is essential that a detailed risk analysis is conducted on frequent intervals to identify the nature and existence of risks that arise with the passage of time (Campana, 2008). Since new threats arise continuously, the managers should be extremely vigilant in this regard and continuous monitoring should be carried out to detect the risks. Additionally, they should continuously update their knowledge regarding detection and management of the risks that arise in the world of information technology. The basic notion that underlies the measurement of success of risk analysis is the comparison of performance to the already established objectives. The risk analysis can be regarded as being successful if the performance of the system shows the required improvement (Bonham, 2008). Contrary to this, if the performance fails to correspond to the pre-defined objectives, risk analysis may be regarded as being faulty or unsuccessful. ReferencesBonham, S. S. Diseases Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Diseases - Term Paper Example (2). The parasitic protozoa species of the plasmodium genus is responsible for malaria in humans making it the vector for transmission of malaria. The primary mode of transmission of the infection is through the bite of a female anopheles species of mosquito. Severe malaria that can lead to severe morbidity or even death is normally attributed to Plasmodium falciparum. Though malaria can also be transmitted during blood transfusion or between mother and child during pregnancy, these modes of transmission are found to occur rarely. (2). The plasmodia are present in the saliva of the infected anopheles mosquito and pass it on to the human host at the time of drawing blood from the human as its meal. The plasmodia target the red blood cells and enter them and use the hemoglobin and other proteins in the cells for nutrition. This results in RBC cystoloysis leading to the toxic metabolic byproducts entering the blood stream and producing the symptoms of malaria, which resemble flu and include chills, headache, myalgias, and malaise. Jaundice, anemia and kidney failure are the more severe results of malaria, which can progress to coma and death. The more severe consequences of malaria can be avoided through proper treatment. (2). Chloroquine phosphate remains the drug of choice in the treatment of malaria. (2). However the treatment of malaria is not easy because of resistance to chloroquine and evaluation of resistance by the infecting strain is essential to decide on the anti-malarial agent to be used. Where resistance is encountered use of other forms of quinine or a range of other anti-malarial drugs capable of arresting the infection would have to be considered for use. (3). Filariasis occurs in both humans and animals. The nematode parasites of the order Filariidae or filariae are responsible for the infection. Only

Abolition of African American Slavery Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Abolition of African American Slavery - Essay Example From this paper it is clear thatà the educated and elite blacks deserved equal rights of citizenship since they could contribute to the growth of the country. The blacks also used various political and judicial platforms to advocate and fight for this right of citizenship. Also, the tireless efforts of the blacks and the abolitionists played a key role in structuring and supporting the black freedom.à When the non-violent strategies that were used by the abolitionists failed, those that were enslaved and those that were free considered the use of radical actions. As the report discussesà since 1864, the blacks used the National Black Convention Movement to fight for their right to vote and full representation in the American affairs. One aspect of the history is abolition. In the history of Black Americans, there was the formation of the abolitionist movement. The aim of the group was to allow emancipation of all slaves after racial discrimination and segregation. Advocating fo r immediate emulsification made the difference between moderate antislavery advocates and abolitionists. Abolitions due to race were mainly encouraged by regional favor during second great awakening. This activity prompted many people to advocate for emancipation with the consideration of their religion. The idea on abolishment became prominent in other churches and political beginnings in the start of 1830s. This mainly contributed to the division of the region to the north and south and fueled the occurrence of the cold war.

A Computerized World :: essays research papers fc
COMPUTERS A Computerized World Computers play an important role in this modern society. All people around the world are forced the ââ¬Å"computer ageâ⬠nowadays. Since the first computer was made in the late 1950s, which I heard that was came from the Chinese Abacus, the technology has developed extremely. Computers are everywhere and control a great deal of our living environment. More and more areas are being taken over by the computer. Not able to use a computer is a serious handicap with ramifications in all areas of life. Therefore, if people do not know computers or do not know how to use them it means that they are not prepared for the future. They will fall behind our advancing society. Computers have been applied to industry, agriculture, political affairs, economy, military, science and many other fields; it is becoming more and more important. It is reason why I feel; I need to know more about computers such as why computer is useful, history of computer, and Internet. COMPUTERS ARE USEFUL IN OUR LIFE Nowadays, no matter what the professions, a mainstay of the companies prefers to hire employees who basically need to know how to operate computers. ââ¬Å"Knowledge of computersâ⬠has become a basic requirement in job descriptions. As computers are capable of handling large amounts of data in a very short time, they are well suited for word processing. For instance, medical officers use computer to record patientsââ¬â¢ data for finding them easier and more conveniently. Banks also use computers to store information for consumers to know their account conveniently and orderly, etc. The government agencies are the one who use computers most because they need to record confidential data, for instance, the military, and the U.S Census Bureau, etc. The business also use computer password system in the companies that to avoid other companiesââ¬â¢ stealing their business secrets. Therefore, the secret data will not let out to other countries or companies. Since a small diskette can contain much more data than a written page, and it takes less place, I think it will not be too long all the paper-archives are replaced by magnetic tapes and diskettes. It is possible to get the American telephone book on just one diskette. HISTORY OF COMPUTERS à à à à à About two hundred years before, the word ââ¬Å"computerâ⬠started to appear in the dictionary. Some people even did not know what is a computer. However, most of the people today not just knowing what is a computer, but understand how to use a computer.

Detailed Guidance Essay
The key to doing well on this task is detail. Several sections require that you analyze information. This requires that you read carefully, think deeply and show your insight that you gained from the information provided in the case study. A1. Utah Symphony Strengths and Weaknesses When picking out the strengths and weaknesses of symphony there isnà ¿t a list to which you can refer. Rather, you will want to read the case study carefully and to use your insight to discover indications of strengths and weaknesses in the data provided in the case. Be sure to cite examples and to address all four required areas including: financial strengths/financial weaknesses & leadership strengths/leadership weaknesses of the symphony. The key will be to think deeply about the facts of the case and to provide insightful responses. When considering financial strengths and weaknesses some items that you might consider include: profitability, stability, capital availability, reliance on revenue streams, fundraising, endowment sizes, expenses structures, policies that effect finances etc. and anything that you believe would affect the finances of the firm in a positive or negative way. When considering leadership strengths and weaknesses your focus should be on the leaders of the symphony, Keith Lockhart. What his strengths that you can make a case would improve is effectiveness as a leader? What are his weaknesses that would lessen his effectiveness as leader? Another thing to consider would be if there are any vacant key positions that would influence the leadership of the organization. Be sure to expound upon each strength and weakness. For a hypothetical example; if I were to indicate that the opera had a profit I would further indicate whether this was a strength because it was significant or I could as easily support that it the profit was so small in relation to its expense structure that the level of profitability was actual a financial weakness.à Now that I had made a general claim I would bring in the numbers from the case study to support my claim and then move on to the next strength or weakness. The key will be to discuss each strength and weakness enough to establish that it is, in fact, a strength or a weakness. A1a. Steps for Utah Symphony Now youà ¿ve provided some really good insight in your discussion about weaknesses for the symphony and in doing so you have identified a number of weaknesses. The evaluators will be looking to see that youà ¿ve provide recommendations of key steps that Anne can take for each of the weaknesses that you identified in your discussion. Also, with regard to key steps you will want to identify specific actions that Anne can take. For examples if one of the weaknesses is poor fundraising you might suggest that Anne sets aside a period of time each week during which she can employ her fundraising skills to improve fundraising. The recommendations of steps that she can take can be common-sense, basic steps (nothing fancy) but that would be effective in dealing with the weaknesses. A2. Utah Opera Strengths and Weaknesses Review the case study carefully to find examples of the strengths and weaknesses in the financial and leadership aspects of the symphony. Be sure to cite examples and to address all four required areas including: financial strengths/financial weaknesses & leadership strengths/leadership weaknesses. The key will be to think deeply about the facts of the case and to provide insightful responses. When considering financial strengths and weaknesses some items that you might consider include: profitability, stability, capital, liquidity, revenue streams, fundraising, endowment sizes, expenses structures, policies that effect finances etc. When considering leadership strengths and weaknesses your focus should be on Anne Ewers. What are her leadership strengths? What are her strengths that you can make a case for would assist her ability to lead? What are her leadership weaknesses? Does she have any personal liabilities that wouldà weaken her ability to lead. Be sure to expound upon each strength and weakness. For a hypothetical example; if I were to indicate that the symphony had a profit I would further indicate whether this was a strength because it was significant or I could as easily support that it the profit was so small in relation to its expense structure that the level of profitability was actual a financial weakness. Now that I had made a general claim I would bring in the numbers from the case study to support my claim and then move on to the next strength or weakness. The key will be to discuss each strength and weakness enough to establish that it is, in fact, a strength or a weakness. A2a. Steps for Utah Opera Now youà ¿ve provided some good insight in your discussion about weaknesses for the Opera and in doing so you have identified a number of weaknesses. A3. Scorecard Aspects Find and download the Balanced Scorecard document given to you in Task Stream. The balanced scorecard is not covered in your book. Look at the book from SkillPort à ¿ Performance Drivers: A Practical Guide to Using the Balanced Scorecard. This is where the template came from. Read chapter 1, 2 and 3 to best understand it. à ¿Compare the information in the current scorecards for each company to the cultures you can discern from the case study. Do you think the scorecards adequately address the strengths and weaknesses? Why or why not? B. Merged Company Balanced Scorecard (Create a Balanced Scorecard for the merged company using the strategic goals. These goals are given to you in the directions for the task (see information above the questions). à ¿Donà ¿t just combine the symphony and opera goals, CSFà ¿s and measurement. à ¿Use the strategic goals to develop a goal for each of the four aspects. Now, be creative, what should the critical success factors and measurements be? à ¿Make sure to create and include a vision statement and a business model statement (you can use the ones on the symphony and opera balanced scorecards as a model). When creating the goals for the individual sections of the balanced scorecard you will want to create goals that are specific to the section (finance, customer, internal etc.) but that, if achieved, would help the company to achieve the five first-year strategic goals that are identified at the top of the task. C. Merged Company Strengths and Weaknesses The key here is to analyze the company utilizing the balances scorecard as an analytical tool. In earlier sections you had to analyze strengths and weaknesses as you pull them out of the facts of a case study. However, now you have been introduced to a new analytical tool; the balanced scorecard and you will need to analyze each element of the balanced scorecard. You should analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the merged company addressing each section of the scorecard e.g. financial customer, internal process & learning and growth. D. Issues From reading the case study and after reading about change management in Chapter 18 of the Kreitner and Kinicki, discuss an issue in each of the 3 areas (finance, human resources, and customer satisfaction) then include good mitigating steps that Anne could take to prevent the problem.â⬠¨Ã¢â¬ ¨D1. Mitigating Actions This section requires that you identify 3 actions that Anne can immediately take to mitigate the three issues you identified above. (You should provide one recommendation for each of the issues that you identified in part D.) You should not only identify, but should alsoà explain, exactly what Anne should do for each of the three recommendations that you provide. â⬠¨E. In-Text Citations and References in APA Format Every reference that is listed on the Reference list should have been cited in-text in your response. If you did not cite something in-text it should be taken off of this reference list. However, at minimum you should cite the case study and the course textbook and there should be corresponding in-text citations within your response.
